Seems i´m just a little bit late to comment here...hope nobody cares^^
L was just the best character of the whole manga and i also think that after he got killed the manga/anime (nearly the same here) got kind of boring.
But the end of the anime is just great, even if i would had prefered that in the end L wins against kira...Then i think the anime would have been perfect^^

Oh for sure as hell L was the best character. I was offended when Light killed him afterwards I just didn't care anymore how the rest of the manga would turn out.

The only thing that kinda pissed me off was how unceremoniously they killed L. It was just kinda something that went and passed, Light didn't even have a huge laughing moment (in the manga). He was just gone without any hesitation and somehow the author expected us to just keep following the story. Which I did, but with a pouty face.

L was clearly the hero of the manga and i just love his personality in every aspect. And when he was gone everybody just died down and just wanted it to end with no caring about the outcome. Near and Mello will never be as smart and fun as L(no matter what they say). At least i'm glad Light dies, so i was satisfied a little with the ending.
