i never thought about it, but i know they probably used locations as templates. I wonder if there is any other "series" than tokyo godfathers that shows poorer parts of tokyo.

Actually there are books filled with pictures of regular Japanese buildings, homes, schools, streets etc. A lot of mangaka use these for duplication (meaning they just copy them directly from the book) since that takes a lot less time than coming up with backgrounds yourself
