Well yeah there were a lot of lucky breaks he caught, like how Misa just happened to idolize Kira and just happened to get a Death Note, as well as when Aizawa was returning to headquarters he just barely managed to persuade Naomi Misora to reveal her name in time to kill her. Light got a lot of breaks like that so really L is superior to him. Also I think I skipped over this part in the manga, but in the show it made no sense how Near figured out Mikami was X-Kira. He was surrounded by TVs and all he did was use his "Near Power" to find which one of the TVs had X-Kira on it and that's how they moved things along...that was one hell of a lucky break.
No Ryuzaki I don't think it's weird to talk about Death Note, it's a very interesting concept with all the rules and such, and the plot was well done. The only thing I think is disturbing is when students go and buy their own Death Notes and then get suspended from school or arrested by the police...I mean seriously why would anyone buy a Death Note, you know it doesn't work if you write names in it so you're just asking to get arrested.
