To scrumly1, the whole point with Reiji's comments about aoki is more geared to his need to make Aoki look less heroic or intelligent than himself. It is a part of his little self delusion that he is this great guy. Face it, he really didn't do much to give Mimi any confidence in her self just made her a little more aware of how fast she is growing and leaving her childhood long before she is ready.
